Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER - Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer, and closes in on a shocking suspect--a sitting judge--in "one of the best crime reads of the year。。。。 Bristling with high-tech detail and shivering with suspense。。。。 Worth staying up all night to finish" (Wall Street Journal)。

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate。 She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed。 Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change。

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases。 Jeri Crosby's father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold。 But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades。 Along the way, she has discovered other victims。

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible。 The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement。 He is the most cunning of all serial killers。 He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law。

He is a judge, in Florida--under Lacy's jurisdiction。

He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way。 How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

The Judge's List is by any measure John Grisham's most surprising, chilling novel yet。

Excellent!

This was my first John Grisham book (I know, I know) and let me say, I was supremely disappointed。 First of all, I did the audiobook so my review may be slightly different had I read it myself, but I hated the narrator。 She was very flat, used the same, annoyed-sounding intonation with every single character。 I often found myself getting confused about who was talking because they sounded so similar, and sometimes she would switch voice tone and still be the same character talking! I was not a fan。In regards to the storyline itself, also utterly disappointing。 It was very slow and I kept expecting some big surprise to come up, but it just never did。 It was all very predictable and the ending was so cliche and uninspired。 Many of the actions of the characters were akin to 80’s horror flick dumb blondes…。like why on EARTH would you do that??-‘d with no explanation。 I’ll spare the details so as not to spoil it, but it just had many contradictions by the main characters。Additionally, there was a large plot hole left that I expected to be filled in somewhere regarding one of the murders and who did it, and it just never got explained further。 I’m shocked this book has 4+ stars because it truly was disappointing。Oh…。and don’t let me forget the completely stereotypical descriptions of the female characters which could ONLY have been written by an old man。 “You eat like a bird。” “They both stayed in shape” “I don’t plan on gaining weight。” Thought we left that garbage in the 90’s? Completely unnecessary for the story in my humble opinion。 。。。more

Another good Grisham story, Not my personal favorite but still an enjoyable read。

Just not very good。 The plot wasn’t great。 Little suspense。 Characters were annoying。 Narrator was awful, but I don’t think she can be totally to blame for how mediocre it was。

Julie Menke

Good page turner as usual

Loved the Florida Panhandle setting, characters & plot of this book…always a Grisham fan, but this story is one of his best…I can see the movie now!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book got off to a slow start, and never really picked up。 I liked Jeri, but not really any of the other characters。 I really didn’t like how in dialogue, the characters constantly said each other’s names in a very artificial way。 Finally, I was confused about how some plot lines — like the accident and lawsuit—never resolved, while others—like the proposal on the beach—resolved kind of unnecessarily。 Also, it was very r/menwritingwomen at times。

Kristi

Excellent! Some of the same characters as The Whistler, a few years down the road。 Great audiobook read by Mary Louise Parker。

Heather Doerksen

Book was ok, the ending was lame。

Jasmine

Interesting as it kept you wanting to read even though you knew who the murderer was and why the whole time, just basically them trying to catch him。

Typical John Grisham book with plenty of twists and turns and unique characters。 He has written better but this is readable and entertaining。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Fantastic。 I had gone off Grisham for a while, was suffering a bit of same same。 But this was next level great! One thing - I felt there was a hole in the plot with there being two remaining on his list but he only took one out。 Who was the last one?

Jimat

Beetje teleurstellend。 Er gebeurt te weinig om het echt spannend te maken。

I like how he brings us really close to violence with the main actors but can't seem to get them seriously hurt。 Makes reading his works feel safe。 I like how he brings us really close to violence with the main actors but can't seem to get them seriously hurt。 Makes reading his works feel safe。 。。。more

DNF on page 70。 This is my first Grisham book, and I was hyped since he is "a good writer。" There's lots of telling in this book (it's all telling, no showing, basically), no intrigue or mystery, heaps of repetition with Jeri telling Laci why Bannick is the murderer or why she doesn't want to go to the FBI (LOTS of that, even though it doesn't make sense, but whatever (I thought Grisham might have also thought it didn't make sense because he keeps bringing it up again as if he is trying to find DNF on page 70。 This is my first Grisham book, and I was hyped since he is "a good writer。" There's lots of telling in this book (it's all telling, no showing, basically), no intrigue or mystery, heaps of repetition with Jeri telling Laci why Bannick is the murderer or why she doesn't want to go to the FBI (LOTS of that, even though it doesn't make sense, but whatever (I thought Grisham might have also thought it didn't make sense because he keeps bringing it up again as if he is trying to find a legitimate reason why, but failing))。 When we get to a Bannick Chapter/perspective, there is SO MUCH HEAD-HOPPING。 So much telling。 Passive voice throughout。 The scene in question was a murder - a murder!! And the writing was as passive as it could be。THIS is good writing? THIS is what is popular? For what it's worth, I DNFed after that murder, but that was probably the most exciting thing that happened in the book, but I was so focused on the shoddy writing that I got no enjoyment out of it。I wanted to read this because it is shorter than "A Time to Kill"。 I am going to read that, instead, and hope it's better (it should be)。 I still have hopes for it, as other fellow 1-star reviews mention Grisham's writing is meant more for the legal thriller genre。。。 and this was not a legal thriller (I don't know what it is, but not legal, nor a thriller)。 It's just REALLY unfortunate that this was my first Grisham book - it had so much potential to be a book I'd enjoy。 I'm glad others liked it, and I'm sad to see myself in the minority, but it is what it is。 Out of all things in this story, I would say Jeri had the most potential to be an interesting character。 Unfortunately, her characterization was just all over the place。 For years she investigates all these murders。 She's smart, she's clearly DRIVEN。 She's made up all these aliases to get all this info from police stations on murders in different states。 But now: "I'm scared to go to the FBI。 I'm scared, Laci。 I need you。 I'm SO scared。" And literally in the next paragraph starts telling Laci how things need to be done。 I mean, it was hilarious in a "make it make sense" kind of way。 (People can genuinely be kick-ass AND scared and have me understand that conflict within, but the writing did not prop this up at all, imo)。 She might have just been manipulating her - that would make the most sense, but eh。 Don't really care, unfortunately。Laci was really boring, had no intitiative (she just let Jeri decide everything and steer their working relationship, which I thought was hilarious and only happening in order to move the plot forward), and kept repeating "Not my job。 Go to the FBI," and she didn't have any interesting characteristics to make her stand out。 (There was an attempt made, but it just felt so SHALLOW。 She's INDEPENDENT and single (but not single, she has a BF), and she has a sassy dog because readers LOVE dogs and basically means readers will love her!!)。 I don't know what she wants, what she feels。 She was bland。 Hell, there was a lot more backstory/infodumping telling-session given on one of her coworkers who smokes and now has cancer and rides in a scooter than to her。 Just。。。 fantastic。 I did not like it。 。。。more

A good James Patterson book, easy to read but a bit graphic。 The murder descriptions are a bit hard to read but some of his other books were worse。 I wonder if readers asked him to tone it down。 I felt frustrated with the ending as did Lacy and Jeri I’m sure。

Rita Colvin

Page turner - thx John Grisham for such a goodread。

Bob Marshall

Well written except the scenario is a bit too unlikely。 It is only in fiction that serial killers murder because they bear a grudge (as the author admits during the story)。

Daria Romankow

Only at the end did it get exciting。 Don’t waste your time。 There are many other good books out there with better plots and characters。

I really enjoyed this book。 I did the audio book version。 I liked the original reader of "The Whistler" (which was the book before this one) so much better though for sure。 However, I didn't let the reader of this book get to me, and enjoyed it anyways。 I really enjoyed this book。 I did the audio book version。 I liked the original reader of "The Whistler" (which was the book before this one) so much better though for sure。 However, I didn't let the reader of this book get to me, and enjoyed it anyways。 。。。more

Mmmm。。。 It's been a while I hadn't read Grisham and I was quite disappointed。 A lot of repeats。 Yes, a lot of repeats。 The main carachter is also quite dull。 And, if you look for that kind of stories, it's quite far away from courts and legal shenanigans。 I bet they won't make a movie out of it。 Mmmm。。。 It's been a while I hadn't read Grisham and I was quite disappointed。 A lot of repeats。 Yes, a lot of repeats。 The main carachter is also quite dull。 And, if you look for that kind of stories, it's quite far away from courts and legal shenanigans。 I bet they won't make a movie out of it。 。。。more

Who would believe a judge could be a serial killer? Fast paced and engaging investigation to prove It so。
